Tigers To Promote Jackson Jobe
The Detroit Tigers are poised to elevate pitching prospect Jackson Jobe to the major league roster ahead of tomorrow’s game. Jobe will join the bullpen, with right-hander Shelby Miller being designated for assignment as part of the move, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press on X.
The Tigers’ season has taken unexpected turns, having hovered below .500 for much of the summer before becoming clear sellers at the trade deadline. They traded away veteran players Jack Flaherty, Andrew Chafin, Mark Canha, and Carson Kelly in a move to focus on the future.
With just two months left in the season, the Tigers have turned their attention to younger players, seeking to identify contributors for 2025 and beyond. The strategy has paid off, as the team has posted a strong 30-17 record over August and September, allowing them to contend for a playoff spot. Currently, the Tigers and Royals are tied for the final two Wild Card positions, with the Twins just one game behind and the Mariners two games back.
As they aim to complete their remarkable turnaround, the Tigers are exploring all avenues to bolster their roster, including the call-up of one of baseball’s top prospects.
Jobe, 22, was selected third overall in the 2021 draft and was already recognized as a leading prospect prior to his professional debut. Although his initial outings in Single-A resulted in a 4.52 ERA over 18 starts, he showed promise with a strong finish at High-A, posting a 1.15 ERA in three games.
In 2023, a back injury sidelined him until June, but he excelled thereafter, compiling a 2.81 ERA and a 32.6% strikeout rate over 64 innings. So far in 2024, he has pitched 91 2/3 innings with a 2.36 ERA across 21 starts, showcasing his skills with a fastball that sits in the mid to high 90s and an impressive slider/sweeper.
His outstanding performance has significantly elevated his prospect ranking, with Baseball America placing him second overall, while MLB Pipeline ranks him sixth. He is also highly regarded by ESPN and Keith Law, affirming his status as a rising star in the league.
