Former WWE CEO Vince McMahon has publicly expressed his discontent with Netflix’s upcoming docuseries that chronicles his life, which is scheduled to premiere on Wednesday. In a statement shared via his social media accounts on Monday, McMahon revealed that he recently watched an “early partial cut” of the series and feels it falls short of expectations. He stated, “This doc lacks substance and follows the predictable path of merging the ‘Mr. McMahon’ character with my true identity, Vince. The title and promotional materials alone make that clear.”
The docuseries aims to trace McMahon’s remarkable journey from his father’s regional wrestling promotion to establishing a global entertainment powerhouse. However, it also delves into some of the more controversial aspects of the industry, including the steroid abuse scandal that plagued the company in the 1990s and the allegations of sexual misconduct that ultimately led to his resignation earlier this year.
In his critique, McMahon emphasized that much of the content has been misrepresented or omitted entirely, which he believes is intended to confuse the audience. He accused the producers of employing standard editing techniques, such as using out-of-context footage and outdated soundbites, to skew viewer perception and support a misleading narrative. He specifically highlighted that a lawsuit stemming from an affair he ended was inaccurately presented as proof that he embodies the “Mr. McMahon” persona.
Despite his criticisms, McMahon noted that he does not regret his involvement in the documentary. He expressed hope that the producers would have taken the opportunity to present a more balanced account of his life and the incredible business he built, which is marked by excitement, drama, and various life lessons, alongside the controversies. He concluded by urging viewers to approach the series with an open mind, reminding them that every story has multiple perspectives.
